During the Roaring Twenties, an American doctor from New York, Joseph Knirim, came to the region. To the villagers' vast surprise, he sang the praises of the cheese which, he alleged, had cured him of a serious stomach ailment. He, among others, was at the origin of a public subscription to finance a monument to the glory of Camembert. In 1926, the monument was erected at the crossroads below the village; it was inaugurated on April 20, 1927. Recently a picnic area has been constructed nearby, on the peacefully flowing Viette river.
